Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake Strikes Near Cebu, Leaves 17 Dead

A strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the central Philippines on October 1, 2025. The quake struck about 10 kilometers northwest of San Isidro, Leyte. It caused major damage in parts of Cebu, especially in Bogo City and San Remigio.

At least 17 people have been reported to have died. Thirteen fatalities were reported in Bogo City. Four deaths occurred in San Remigio, Cebu. At least three others were injured in Bogo City. A walls collapse caused the injuries. More injuries are expected as rescue teams assess affected areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed the quake’s strength and location. The shaking was strong and widely felt. Early reports show a smaller magnitude 2.2 foreshock. It occurred at 6:09 AM, 9 km northwest of Bogo City. It had a depth of 22 km.

Several buildings were damaged. One building collapsed in Bogo City. Other structures, roads, and electrical substations were cracked or weakened. Power outages were reported in parts of Cebu province. Crews are working to restore electricity.

Localized evacuations took place. Residents in low-lying areas were advised to move to higher ground. Evacuations were reported in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. Other areas in Cebu were also evacuated. Authorities are checking for further risks.

No tsunami warning has been issued. But PHIVOLCS released a minor Sea Level Disturbance advisory. It warns of possible unusual waves or strong currents. The public is urged to stay away from beaches. This advice applies to the provinces of Cebu, Leyte, and Biliran. The warning remains in effect until further notice.

Emergency teams are responding. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is coordinating efforts. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. Medical teams are on standby.

PHIVOLCS is monitoring aftershocks. Residents are advised to stay alert. They should follow the instructions from local authorities. Damaged buildings should not be entered until inspected.
