Manila Symphony Orchestra Opens Season with Puccini Masterpieces

The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) begins its “Road to 100” journey. Maestro Marlon Chen conducts this series. It starts with a tribute to Giacomo Puccini. The double bill concert will feature two of Puccini’s lesser-known gems, “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi.” The dual concert was held in Areté Ateneo’s fantastic Hyundai Hall.

Puccini is famous for his tear-jerking opera “Madame Butterfly.” “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi” showcase the composer’s brilliance and versatility. Though both one-act operas, they offer contrasting themes and musical styles. One act delivers a mysterious journey of love and sacrifice, and the other a comedic twist.

“Suor Angelica” starts with a choir of nuns and later introduces a mysterious nun. Sister Angelica’s identity is slowly revealed and the past she burdens. The story lurks with grief as news of death saddens and glorifies her at the end.

The concert ended with a comedy piece “Gianni Schicchi.” Buoso Donati, a rich merchant in Florence, suddenly died which surprised the relatives leaving his inheritance to the friars. The relatives turn to Schicchi for help. However, the unexpected turn of events gets a laugh from the audience. It ends in a love story.

Puccini’s two masterpieces delivered in Italian with overhead subtitles didn’t leave out its variety of audience. The seats filled with Italians, Filipinos, and other European nationalities. They are entertained by MSO’s beautiful musical performance. The amazing talents of the opera actors captivate them.

This performance is a significant moment for the MSO. They are embarking on their journey towards a century of musical excellence.
