Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra Triumphs with Gold at Bratislava Festival

The Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra (MSJO) achieved a remarkable feat at the 13th Bratislava International Youth Music Festival. They clinched both the Gold Prize and the prestigious Grand Prix for Orchestra. This impressive win highlights the orchestra’s exceptional talent and dedication, making it their first major triumph at the Bratislava competition.

The MSJO performed exceptionally under the baton of conductor Jeffrey Solares. They impressed the jury and earned a remarkable score of 99 points. This achievement placed them among the festival’s elite, competing against over 500 talented young musicians from 13 countries. The festival, held from July 2-4, 2024, provided a platform for these aspiring musicians to showcase their skills. They were under the guidance of renowned artistic director Prof Milan Kolena. A distinguished jury panel composed of musicians from Slovakia, USA, Australia, and Italy oversaw the performances.

The MSJO delivered a captivating performance at the Slovakian Radio Symphony Hall. Their program was diverse and featured works by Stephan Koncz, Antonin Dvorak, Ernani Cuenco, and Ryle Nicole Custodio. This victory adds to the orchestra’s growing list of accomplishments. They achieved first prize at the 2018 Summa Cum Laude International Music Festival in Vienna.

The 40-member MSJO delegation have embarked on a successful European concert tour. Alongside with their faculty mentors Jeffrey Solares, Sara Maria Gonzales, and Arnold Josue. Their sponsor, Standard Insurance, is led by Mr Ernesto “Judes” Echauz. Before their Bratislava triumph, they delivered captivating performances in Budapest, Hungary, and Salzburg, Austria. They are now set to continue their tour in Vienna. They hope to replicate their 2018 win at the Summa Cum Laude International Music Festival. They will conclude their European adventure in Prague on July 12th.
