When The British Owned The Philippines

Everybody knows that the Philippines was a Spanish colony. Did you know that the British ruled from 6 October 1762? It lasted up to the first week of April 1764 during the Seven Years’ War. Admiral Samuel Cornish and General William Draper led the British forces to swiftly capture Manila. Overwhelmed, the Spanish Governor-General Manuel Rojo surrendered the city and allowed the British to take control.

Various reforms aimed to improve Manila’s infrastructure and sanitation in the 18 months of British rule. The continuing Spanish reconquest cut short and limited their efforts. The brief conquest allowed British merchants to make new connections and flourished local trade.

The Treaty of Paris in 1763 mandated the return of Manila to Spain. This led to the relinquishing of British control in April 1764. A brief but impactful influence on the Philippines. Such interlude contributed to the rich tapestry of traditions and multicultural identity. The diverse foreign influences shaped the Philippines’ rich heritage, which is often overlooked.
