The University of the Philippines – Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) has launched a two-part campaign. It is called “#GeneTalks.” The campaign aims to foster public understanding. It also promotes discourse on genetic modification (GM) and gene editing (GE) research in the Philippines. The initiative is a response to the Court of Appeals’ ruling. This ruling restricts the use, testing, and importation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). It has significant implications for research institutions like UPD-CS.–

The campaign is spearheaded by the UPD-CS Office of the Associate Dean for Research, Innovation, Development, and Enterprise (OADRIDE). It seeks to bridge the gap between researchers and the public. The campaign explains the complexities of genetic research. It addresses common misconceptions and highlights the potential benefits. —

The first forum, “Lab to Field,” held on November 4, focused on GM research, particularly its application in agriculture. The panel discussed the regulatory processes surrounding GM research in the Philippines and its importance in enhancing food security. Distinguished speakers included Dr. Ernelea Cao, who shed light on the regulatory landscape; Atty. Edmund Jason Baranda, who provided insights into the Court of Appeals’ ruling; and Dr. Lourdes Taylo, who discussed the Bt eggplant project and the role of GMOs in nutrition.–

Dr. Pia Bagamasbad is the Director of the UPD-CS National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPD-CS NIMBB). She emphasized the need for scientists to be aware of the broader implications of their research. “Understanding these dynamics is crucial. It ensures the ethical and responsible conduct of research. It also expands our insights into GM research for the advantage of scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders,” she stated.–

The second forum, “Edit to Innovation,” took place on November 11. It delved into GE technologies. The forum explored their various applications across different fields. Dr. Reynante Ordonio is a Senior Science Specialist at the Philippine Rice Research Institute. He highlighted the current status of biotechnology and GE applications in the country. Meanwhile, Dr. Ron Leonard Dy, Associate Professor at NIMBB, discussed the use of GE in molecular diagnostics.–

Dr. Ma. Anita Bautista, NIMBB Deputy Director for Research and Extension, emphasized the importance of transparency in genetic research. “Communicating genetic research through talks like #GeneTalks provides transparency. It allows the public to ask questions and check the validity of the scientists’ claims,” she explained. “It is a way to bring about societal trust and acceptance. When scientists share information about genetic research and their outcomes, they implicate their authenticity, accountability, and moral and social values.”–

The “#GeneTalks” campaign highlights the essential need for open communication. Public engagement is vital in navigating the complex field of genetic research. UPD-CS addresses concerns and promotes understanding. It highlights potential benefits to guarantee that genetic research continues to advance science and society responsibly and ethically.
