The 55th Annual Convention of the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) and the Philippine College of Cardiology (PCC) occurred on May 27, 2025, at the EDSA Shangri-La. The event, themed “Usapang Puso sa Puso: From a Programmatic to a Policy Analysis,” featured a star-studded Advocacy Hour. Multi-awarded actress Cherry Pie Picache served as a guest speaker.

The convention highlighted the dangers of hypertension, often called the “silent killer.” High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, a leading cause of death globally. Obesity worsens the problem. Excess weight raises blood volume and contributes to insulin resistance, increasing blood pressure. Managing weight through diet and exercise is crucial. Controlling blood pressure with medication and lifestyle changes is also vital.

May is Hypertension Month. The PHA Advocacy Hour focused on collaborations between the PHA, the Department of Health (DOH), the Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight & Obesity (PASOO), and ImagineLaw.

Prevention is always better than cure.” Her son, Nio Tria, a student-athlete, helps her maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Carolyn Narvacan-Montano from PASOO offered tips on combating obesity. PASOO supports PHA’s “PUSO MUNA” campaign, raising awareness about obesity’s link to heart disease.
