Improving the Workplace for PWD

Inclusion took center stage at last week’s gathering. The School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) hosted a major event. The event is entitled Beyond Barriers 2026: SDEAS Employers’ Conference.

The event took place on October 21. Business leaders and advocates gathered for the conference. They discussed ways to improve the workplace. The main goal was opening doors for persons with disabilities.

Dr. Katrina Marie “Kat” Hernandez served as a guest speaker. She delivered a powerful message to the audience. She spoke about the critical need for accessibility. She also highlighted the importance of mobility.

Dr. Hernandez explained that true inclusion goes beyond hiring. Companies must remove physical barriers. They must also update digital platforms. Every worker deserves a fair chance. Mobility aids and proper infrastructure matter. They help employees move with confidence.

“True inclusion means removing every physical and social obstacle in the workplace,” Dr. Hernandez said.

The SDEAS organized the entire program. The school has a long history of advocacy. It champions the rights of the deaf community. It also supports people with various disabilities.

Organizers said the conference aimed to bridge a gap. Many employers want to be inclusive. However, they do not know how to start. The event provided practical steps. Experts shared best practices for hiring. They also discussed workplace accommodations.

Several companies attended the forum. Human resource managers listened to the speakers. They learned about different types of support. Deaf employees need specific visual cues. Others might need wheelchair ramps. Technology plays a huge role as well. Screen readers help the visually impaired. Captioning software aids the hard of hearing.

Dr. Hernandez stressed a key point. Accessibility benefits everyone. A well-designed office is safer. It is also more efficient. Employers realized this truth during the talks.

“When we design for disability, we make life better for everyone. A truly accessible workplace opens doors to untapped potential,” she stated.

The conference featured several panel discussions. Business owners shared their success stories. They talked about hiring diverse talent. These workers bring unique skills. They boost company morale. They also drive innovation.

Participants joined open forums. They asked questions about labor laws. They discussed government incentives for inclusive companies. SDEAS provided resource kits for the attendees. These kits contained guidelines for hiring. They offered tips on creating friendly spaces.

The event ended with a strong commitment. Many employers signed a pledge. They promised to review their offices. They agreed to upgrade their facilities. They will also revise their hiring policies.

SDEAS thanked all the guests. The school hopes to make this an annual event. Beyond Barriers 2026 marked a new chapter. Workplaces are slowly changing. They are becoming more welcoming. Every step brings society closer to equality. Dr. Hernandez left the crowd with a final thought. True progress requires action. Employers must act now.
