The National Library of the Philippines launched a major event. The NLP kickstarted the 36th celebration of the Library and Information Services Month. The event took place yesterday, November 4, 2026. Guests gathered at the NLP Auditorium for the opening ceremony.
This year carries a specific theme. The theme is ASEAN-LINK (ASEAN Libraries: Integrating Networked Knowledge) for Culture. The opening ceremony highlighted a key transformation. Libraries are turning into vibrant centers for public education. They also forge lasting bridges between local institutions and ASEAN information centers.

Director Cesar Gilbert Adriano formally opened the LISM celebration. He serves at the National Library of the Philippines. Other leaders showed strong support. Dr. Jonavie S. Quiambao attended the event. She serves as the vice-head of the NCCA National Committee on Libraries and Information Services. She brought a message from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. She spoke on behalf of Chairman and Executive Director Eric B. Zerrudo PhD.
The speakers focused on a vital goal. They emphasized sustaining connections for local and regional cultural preservation through libraries and archives. The NLP joined hands with other ASEAN institutions. Together, they pursue the aspirations of making resources more accessible to everyone. They also ensure that they are able to maintain the symbols of culture, identity, and literacy.

An acclaimed actress and author delivered a speech. Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan gave a compelling keynote address. She reminded everyone of the profound magic children’s books hold in shaping young minds and preserving enduring knowledge.
Laxa-Pangilinan spoke about the value of reading. She addressed the beauty of using stories and books to enrich the minds of children as they are transported to the realm of wisdom. She drew from her experience as a mother, author, and actress. She reminded the audience to look beyond digital screens, take time to read, and understand society through the resources available in public libraries.
Government agencies united for the cause. The NLP joined forces with various groups for cultural promotion. Partners include the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Philippine Information Agency, and the Presidential Communications Office. Grassroots library networks also helped spearhead the nationwide events.
Cultural performances added life to the venue. The Philippine Barangay Dance Troupe enraptured the audience with a vibrant showcase of traditional Filipino dances.
The NLP planned many activities for the month. The month-long observance features diverse programs. Events include book bazaars and ‘Layb Chikahan’ sessions. People can also enjoy book theater concerts, webinars, and workshops. Other offerings include ‘LISM at the Mall’ exhibits and a book picnic at Lake Sebu. Organizers also scheduled a series of nationwide open contests.
The organizers shared their ultimate vision. With the celebration of LISM, the NLP and its partners seek to champion libraries as more than just reservoirs of books. They are repositories of knowledge and wisdom, spaces for continuous exchange, and touchpoints for cultural linking across borders. They serve as accessible and credible resources that nurture curiosity. They are spaces that encourage lifelong learning, and partners in navigating an increasingly digital world.
