A Girl’s Courage, Fight For Young LGBTQI Rights

A young girl courageously proclaimed her identity within the LGBTQI community. Her proclamation highlighted the challenges many face in similar situations. After sharing her truth, she faced damaging comments. Cyber bullying followed, severely impacting her self-esteem and mental health. Child-advocate Jullia from Save the Children Philippines shared this story. It was during the “Bonggang-Bonggang Bata: Protect LGBTQI Children” press conference. The story underlines the harsh realities that LGBTQI children endure.

In response to these challenges, Save the Children Philippines, alongside Babaylanes, Inc., emphasized the urgent need for protective policies. An example is the SOGIE Equality Bill, which aims to create inclusive environments for LGBTQI children. Rep. Geraldine Roman is a pivotal figure in the advocacy for LGBTQI rights. She is the first transgender woman elected to the Philippine Congress. She stressed the bill’s importance in safeguarding vulnerable children. She noted that current protections for diverse families and children are insufficient. She reinforced the organization’s commitment to creating a safer Philippines for all children.

Addressing these issues is urgent. Alarming statistics from The Trevor Project and other local studies in 2024 further underscore this urgency. It was revealed that 62% of LGBTQI children reported experiencing depression and anxiety. Additionally, 59% had engaged in self-harm over the past year. Suicidal thoughts affected 75% of these children, and nearly half had attempted suicide. Extra research from 2016 by UNICEF documented significant levels of psychological violence against LGBTQI youths. It also highlighted sexual violence, emphasizing the pressing need for action.

A report by Human Rights Watch in 2017 showcased the dire experiences of LGBTQI high school students. These experiences included verbal and physical abuse, sexual harassment, and discriminatory policies. Such conditions contribute to isolation, depression, and suicidal ideation. These statistics represent real individuals and experiences, emphasizing the necessity for policy changes that protect LGBTQI children. Studies have shown that acceptance within communities correlates with significantly lower rates of mental health issues among children.

Jullia called on allies and Filipino families to foster inclusive environments, both online and offline. She urged the passage of the SOGIE Equality Bill. She emphasized that when individuals share their identities, they should be embraced by supportive friends. Understanding families and compassionate communities should also embrace them. This ensures every child can grow up safe and supported. They will feel loved, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or sex characteristics.
