The “It Starts With U: Get CheCKD” initiative recently resumed with an engaging event. It was held on November 30, 2024, at Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Parañaque City. The event was organized by Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc. in collaboration with various health organizations, including the Dialysis Philippines Support Group and the Kidney Transplant Association of the Philippines. This second leg of the campaign featured the Check Your Choices Game Room. It is a life-sized board game. The game is designed to educate participants about kidney function. It teaches ways to maintain kidney health in a fun and interactive manner.

The event was timed perfectly with the festive season in the Philippines. The goal was to raise awareness about chronic kidney disease (CKD). It also focused on its connections with other health issues such as hypertension and diabetes. These conditions are particularly concerning during the holiday season. This is a time when indulgent eating and drinking can be common. CKD occurs when the kidneys become damaged and can’t function properly. It poses significant health risks. Early detection is crucial.
The event included educational talks by nephrologists—Dr. Rhodora Valenzona and Dr. Clifton Pe—provided valuable insights into kidney health and its relationship with heart health and metabolic wellness. Attendees included notable figures in the medical community. They were empowered with the knowledge to make better health choices during the holidays. They can continue these choices beyond the holidays.

Besides the talks, attendees had access to educational booths focusing on heart health. They also had access to booths about type 2 diabetes. Additionally, there was a Health CheCKD Zone offering consultations and screenings for kidney health. The initiative featured a straightforward two-step screening process for checking kidney health. It involved a blood test for creatinine. It also included a urine test for albumin levels.
Dr. Greta Cortez highlighted the importance of events like this in promoting health awareness. She emphasized proactive care and the potential for early detection to significantly improve health outcomes. “It Starts With U: Get CheCKD” used interactive and informative activities. The program succeeded in bringing essential health information directly to the community. It encouraged individuals to prioritize their well-being during the festive season.
