The historic Metropolitan Theater buzzed with anticipation on August 2, 2025, as the inaugural “KORO: National Choral Competition” reached its crescendo. Held during the celebration of Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino (LMP) and Buwan ng Wika, “KORO” celebrated Filipino music and talent. The air crackled with excitement as choirs from across the Philippines gathered to showcase their vocal prowess.
The afternoon began with the Children’s Choir Concert. Three talented groups took the stage. The Matina Central Elementary School Children’s Choir from Davao charmed the audience. The Young Voices of the Philippines (YVP), young veterans of a voice before Pope Francis in Rome, delivered a powerful performance. Completing the trio was the Bacoor HOPE Children’s Chorus (BHCC) from Cavite, who shared the stage with the infamous Philippine Madrigal Singers.

Adding to the afternoon’s magic, Miss Universe 2018 and NCCA Arts Ambassador Catriona Gray graced the event. Her message resonated, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talents and celebrating Filipino arts and culture. “It’s inspiring to see these young singers pursue their passion,” she said. “They are the future of Filipino music.”
As dusk settled, the atmosphere intensified. The Adult Choirs Competition was about to begin. Eight finalists, representing Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and the National Capital Region (NCR), prepared to compete for the coveted title.

The first four choirs took their turn. After their performances, the audience welcomed Asia’s Timeless Diva, Dulce. Her powerful voice filled the theater. Before singing her final song, Dulce shared a personal story. She reminisced about her big break at the Metropolitan Theater in 1979, when she won the 2nd Metro Manila Popular Music Festival. The crowd erupted in applause. She then sang her iconic hit, “Ako Ang Nagwagi, Ako Ang Nasawi,” adding a touch of modern reflection to its timeless message.

The remaining four finalists then delivered their performances. The Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Chorale from NCR, under the direction of Ms. Vanielyn Comandante, showcased its dynamic vocal ensemble. The Adamson University Chorale (AdUC), also from NCR and led by Mr. John Rufiel G. Aniceto, impressed with their precision and artistry.
Representing Luzon, the Bicol Voices Choral (BVC) and the Bicol University (BU) Chorale brought the passion and heart of Bicolano music to the stage. From Visayas, the Kalinaw Chorale of Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod (CSA-B) and the Panag-uyon Adelante Singers (PAS) of the University of San Jose–Recoletos (USJ-R) in Cebu City offered captivating performances. Finally, the F’lomolok Choristers and the University of Mindanao (UM) Digos Chorale represented Mindanao.
After all eight finalists performed, the moment of truth arrived. NCCA presented plaques of appreciation to all five finalists, acknowledging their dedication and talent. Then came the announcement of the top three winners.
The second runner-up was the CSA-B from Visayas, receiving ₱75,000. The first runner-up was the AdUC from NCR, awarded ₱100,000. Finally, the champion was announced. The crowd roared as Mindanao’s F’lomolok Choristers were declared the winners, taking home ₱150,000.

Overwhelmed with joy, the F’lomolok Choristers performed their winning piece one last time. Their voices soared, filling the Metropolitan Theater with pride and celebration. They sang with a passion that echoed the spirit of “KORO.”
The inaugural “KORO: National Choral Competition” was more than a contest. It was a celebration of Filipino music, culture, and talent. It was a testament to the power of choral singing to unite, inspire, and uplift. It was also evidence of the amazing musicality of the Philippine people. As the curtains closed, “KORO” left a lasting song in the hearts of everyone present.
