Wow! What an amazing sight to see the past and present meet! The Filipina is now wearing the baro’t saya at the Philippine Textile Research Institute‘s (PTRI) TelaCon. It has been reinvented with new natural fibres and repurposed textiles. This is a huge step forward towards sustainable fashion in the Philippines.
Just look at the Miss Nina Corpuz pink saya. It was inspired by what was once a kulambo (mosquito net). Miss Anna Lagon’s baro, weaved with silk that keeps her comfortable, was made by Bayo, a brand she built herself. These women are sporting the baro’t saya with their own unique flair, merging tradition and contemporary style.
I’m so amazed by how these designers are taking a traditional garment and making it modern and sustainable. It’s inspiring to see how they’re using recycled materials and natural fibers to create beautiful and unique pieces. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the baro’t saya!
