HABI: The Philippine Textile Council is thrilled to announce the 8th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition and the 4th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition! These prestigious events showcase the incredible talent of Filipino weavers and artisans. The competitions culminate at the 15th Likhang HABI Market Fair, October 10-12, 2025, at the spacious new venue: SPACE in One Ayala, Makati.
This year’s competitions celebrate two iconic Philippine fibers: piña and abaca. Piña, made from pineapple leaf fibers, embodies Filipino elegance. Abaca, known as Manila hemp, represents the strength and versatility of our natural resources. These competitions highlight the beauty and sustainability of traditional crafts in a world of fast fashion.
The 2024 competitions saw outstanding entries. Edgar Cornito won first place in the Piña competition with “Piña Silk, Black and Gold Sinuksok.” Rolly Arboleda of LA HERMINIA WEAVING INDUSTRY impressed with his Abaca Fino Barong. Past winners include National Living Treasure Salinta Monon’s daughter, Rey Rosea Monon Dillera, showcasing inabel designs. These winners represent the rich diversity of Filipino weaving traditions.
Calling All Weavers!
HABI invites weavers, weaving communities, and independent artisans from across the Philippines to participate. Show your skills and creativity! Entries will be judged on authenticity, creativity, technical skill, and cultural narrative. Winners receive recognition, cash prizes, and national exposure.
Competition Details:
Piña Competition: Three categories: Liniwan, Pure Piña, and Natural Fiber Blends with Piña. Entries must be at least two meters long. Natural dyes earn extra points.
Abaca Competition: Categories include Ikat, Abaca Craft, and Nipis. Entries should be two to six meters long. Natural dyes earn extra points.
