Libraries “Lace Up” for Cultural Unity in Nationwide Celebration

Manila’s historic Metropolitan Theater buzzed with energy on Wednesday. The National Library of the Philippines (NLP) collaborated with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Together, they launched the 35th Library and Information Services Month (LISM). The event, held on 05 November 2025, marked the official start of month-long festivities across the nation.

This year’s theme is “Lace Up Libraries – A Hub for Cultural Exploration and Unity through Partnership.” It highlights libraries as vibrant centers. They weave together culture, knowledge, and community identity. Libraries connect people and institutions. They strengthen national unity through learning.

NLP Director Cesar Gilbert Adriano set the stage in his opening remarks. He stressed libraries’ crucial role. They safeguard cultural heritage. They build learning communities for all generations. “Our libraries have always preserved cultural knowledge,” Adriano stated. “Our collections bridge cultures and voices for future learners.”

NCCA Chair Victorino Mapa Manalo delivered the keynote address. He is this year’s lead partner. Manalo called the “lace” theme perfect. “Libraries connect threads of information,” he explained. “You weave them into something new. Then you share it with the people.” Both agencies share a mission. They aim to build an informed, culturally rich society.

Support for LISM 2025 is strong. Messages came from Senators Loren Legarda and Pia Cayetano. Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara also voiced support. International library leader Leslie Weir, IFLA President, added global backing. This shows a wide commitment to library development.

The opening ceremony celebrated Filipino culture. The Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild performed. The University of the Philippines College of Music also took the stage. The Adamson University Chorale led the National Anthem and Doxology. Their performance added dignity and inspiration.

A key moment showed LISM’s national reach. Simultaneous opening ceremonies happened across regions. This reflected libraries’ vital role in diverse communities. The event concluded with a powerful symbol. Officials tapped a ceremonial gong. It represented collective energy and unity. It called on all Filipinos to join the month’s activities.

LISM 2025 runs throughout November. It underscores libraries as essential partners. They drive cultural exploration and national unity. The “lace” theme reminds everyone: libraries hold communities together. They empower learning for the future. Filipinos nationwide are invited to step inside and explore.
