The House of Representatives recently hosted a seminar focused on promoting healthy lifestyles. It emphasized heart health among Filipino children and adults. The seminar highlighted the crucial role everyone plays in ensuring their well-being. The “Champions of Children’s Optimal (COCO) Heart Health” seminar emphasized the importance of parents, guardians, and teachers. It also highlighted the role of healthcare professionals in nurturing strong and healthy children.

Rep. Angelica Natasha Co stressed that a healthy heart is more than just about physical health. It is fundamental to a child’s overall development. Rep. Co is the chairperson of the House Committee on the Welfare of Children. It provides the energy and resilience needed to learn, grow, and thrive. “The choices we make today are crucial. We can provide nourishing meals. We should encourage exercise. Regular checkups are important as well. These choices are key to securing their future,” Co emphasized.

Co’s dedication to this cause stems from a deeply personal experience. Her godchild, 12-year-old Coco Francisco, recently passed away due to heart disease. “His life may have been short, but his story will touch many lives,” Co shared. She added, “Today, we start to weave that story. For many children, this will be the heart of a bright and healthy future. Heart health is the core of our advocacy.”

Co serves as vice-chairperson of the Committee on Health. She pointed out that many children are born with undetected heart conditions. Others develop these conditions without detection. This leads to preventable tragedies. She stressed the need for increased awareness, early screenings, and improved access to quality healthcare.

Dr. Alberto Atilano, director of the Foundation for Lay Education on Heart Diseases, spoke about the importance of preventing cardiovascular disease. He noted a shift in government focus. The focus is moving from managing existing heart conditions to actively preventing them. He mentioned that the Department of Health is now partnering with local government units to promote primary prevention.

Co urged participants to share the knowledge gained from the seminar with their families and communities. “Together, we can make heart health a foundation of our children’s growth and well-being,” she said.

The seminar was held in observance of National Children’s Month. It was attended by students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. This event serves as a significant step in raising awareness. It also promotes a healthier future for Filipino children.
