Losing Governance Over Public Safety

Bicycle commuters and pedestrians face constant danger from irresponsible motorists. They frequently disregard traffic laws and the safety of others, particularly on Boni Avenue.

The negligence of Mandaluyong’s traffic enforcers made the situation worse. Leaving the street feeling more like a racetrack than a thoroughfare. Despite receiving various awards, the city has made little progress in ensuring road safety compared to Quezon City. Where Quezon City (QC) actively prioritizes the well-being of its citizens through initiatives for greener transportation.

The Green Transport Division, under the authority of the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) of QC, keeps public safety in place. The DPOS holds a monthly town hall meeting with various sectors and communities to improve the implementation of green transport.

Initially, Mandaluyong took a step in the right direction when they implemented the bicycle lanes in May 2020. Strict penalties for motorists who violated this space with a fine of ₱1,000. However, the city lost interest in enforcing these regulations in 2023. They removed penalty signages allowing motorists to intrude upon bicycle lanes. This lack of enforcement has diminished respect for Boni Avenue. It is named after the national hero Andres Bonifacio. His death anniversary on 30 November is notably overshadowed by the current state of the road.

The road is an important access route to other cities in Metro Manila. The safety of Boni Avenue is critical, especially in light of escalating traffic congestion. The city government’s failure to prioritize public safety threatens the well-being of its citizens. They risk potential accidents and injuries. Ultimately, a local government should prioritize safety and efficiency on the road. Demonstrating the welfare of its citizens is of paramount importance.

If Mandaluyong City wants to be recognized, public safety should be of utmost priority and importance. Actively implementing strict penalties can bring them back into the Green Transport game. It can bring the city back on track and show its true local good governance.
