MWA Declares 2026 ‘The Year of the Sardine’ to Boost Global Wellness

The Medical Wellness Association (MWA) has named 2026 “The Year of the Sardine.” This campaign aims to highlight the tiny fish’s role in improving global health. The campaign aims to educate consumers about the benefits of nutrient-dense foods, spotlighting sardines as an affordable and accessible “superfood.” Dr. Christopher Breuleux, MWA President, emphasized the urgent need to tackle declining wellness metrics worldwide. He linked poor metabolic health to rising risks of diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions.

James Michael Laffety, an MWA board member, called sardines a “powerhouse” due to their omega-3 fats, protein, and essential vitamins. He noted their growing popularity, boosted by social media trends like “the 3-day sardine fast” and features on top podcasts. The global sardine market has grown at a rate of 7% annually. MWA predicts double-digit growth by 2026, citing recent updates to the U.S. Food Pyramid.

MWA has awarded Mega Sardines, a Filipino brand, its prestigious “Superfood” seal. The company uses a “Catch to can in 12 hours” process to ensure freshness. Mega Prime Foods, the parent company, champions the Filipino value of Malasakit—giving freely to society. CEO Michelle Tiu Lim Chan said the seal honors the family’s 50-year mission to provide quality nutrition. The company now funds clinical studies to expand research on sardines and metabolic health.

With wellness trends shifting toward metabolic health, sardines remain a top choice. Their affordability, nutrition, and rising awareness make them a global solution for healthier living.
