The Philippines made its first appearance at the Leipziger Buchmesse (Leipzig Book Fair) from March 27th to 30th, 2025. This marked a significant step towards the country’s Guest of Honour role at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2025. The Philippine delegation showcased 150 titles. This included 14 German-translated Filipino works. Six of these were new releases.

The country’s stand, located in Hall 4, C402, hosted eleven events. These events took place at various locations throughout the fairgrounds and the city of Leipzig. Award-winning and emerging authors represented the Philippines. Renren Galeno, J. Philip Ignacio, and Paolo Herras showcased the country’s vibrant graphic novel and comic scene. Celebrated authors Daryll Delgado, Jessica Zafra, and Stephanie Coo led discussions. These focused on important themes such as climate change, colonialism, globalization, and social inequality. The art of literary translation was also highlighted. Translators Kristian Cordero, Annette Hug, and Monica Fröhlich shared insights.
The Philippine presence extended beyond literature. An exhibition titled “Oculus” opened on March 15th and ran until May 18th, 2025. This exhibition explored the intersection of science, art, and imagination. It was hosted at the Heidelberger Kunstverein. The exhibition examined how we “see things,” blurring the lines between reality and the spectral.

Curated by Patrick Flores, the exhibition referenced José Rizal’s work. Rizal’s ophthalmological studies in Heidelberg and his novel Noli Me Tangere inspired the exhibition. Artists Stephanie Misa and Joscha Steffens contributed to the exhibition. Their work showed how seeing, shaped by ecology and imagination, creates unique visions. The Philippines’ participation in Leipzig served as a strong preview of its larger role at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2025.
