Researchers from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) conducted a recent study. The study also involved the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Carabao Center. It has reclassified Philippine carabao into two distinct species: swamp buffalo (Bubalus kerabau) and riverine buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

This distinction is crucial for conservation efforts. It provides a clearer understanding of the genetic diversity of these important animals. It also has implications for breeding programs. Breeders can now tailor their programs to achieve specific goals. These goals include maximizing milk or meat production. The findings of this study were published in the Philippine Journal of Science.
