Two Scientists Win Award For Empowering Women’s Health

Two esteemed scientists from the University of the Philippines – Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) have been honored. They received recognition with the 2024 NSTW (National Science and Technology Week) Outstanding Research and Development Award for Basic Research. This award is presented by the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines. Dr. Pia Bagamasbad, affiliated with the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, conducted pivotal research. Her work links stress, disrupted light-dark cycles, and breast cancer. She identified the KLF9 gene as a crucial factor. She stressed that basic research is important for practical solutions. She noted how Nobel Prize-winning discoveries in physiology and medicine have made an impact.

Dr. Aurelio de los Reyes V is from the Institute of Mathematics. He received the Outstanding Research Prize. He was recognized for his innovative work on hormone-based contraceptives. He emphasized that their research goes beyond population control. The focus is on empowering women through informed choices about conception and motherhood. They use mathematical strategies to improve health outcomes and understanding.

Both scientists will receive the Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal during the NSTW opening ceremony on November 27. They are invited to present their research at the ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth on November 28. They will attend #PilipiNAST Kapehan. This is a discussion series designed to showcase NAST PHL’s initiatives. It also promotes science and technology in the Philippines.
