An Indie Film to Watch Out For

Are you a big fan of indie films or just curious what’s new on the plate? Cinemalaya Film Festival is coming this year in August. And, you want to watch out for this.

A film entitled “Tirik” is on its way to Cinemalaya at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and selected cinemas. A film that could be worth watching on the big screen. On paper, it is a story that you wanted to screenperience [screen experience] rather than watch on your palm.

Getting to the Plot
Let’s walk you through what this film is about. The film is set against the backdrop on the war on drugs in an unusual taxi ride. A ride that could change the perspective of the story.

A story about the moral conflicts of the taxi driver and a priest. A story that could branch out perspectives tangled in one direction, to a funeral.

It is difficult to say what the film will really unfold. We just have to put this on the radar. We talk to the cast and production team about what this can bring to Filipino viewers.

Two actors are signing a contract for their major roles in “Tirik” with the film director. L-R: Floyd Tena, May-I Guia Padilla, and Rocco Nacino. Photo: George Buid, 2026.

The Casts and Crew
Rocco Nacino is cast as Father Bert, the passenger priest in this story. Nacino is an acclaimed actor whom you have seen in the drama series Lilet Matias: Attorney-At-Law and in Bar Boys. He wanted to audition for this film but ended up at a table read.

Nacino shares his excitement, “As with everybody I am very excited to work on this film. I have been wanting to have a film in Cinemalaya. Funny that I crossed paths with May-i [Guia Padilla]. He told me that I could be part of this film. I told him that I want to audition for this film. Instead, we did a script read.”

“I’m happy that I was given this challenge. It’s very different from doing EV and I’m very motivated, especially today. I’m looking forward to shoot this film and then showcase it. It’s something that I am definitely proud of. Especially for this year. So thank you again.”

The taxi driver in this film is played by Floyd Tena as Santos Mira. Tena is known for his small role in GomBurZa and among other films. This is his first major role.

“Speaking of Gomburza. This is proof that there is no such thing as a big or small role. I got notice for a short exposure in that film. I am thankful to May-I who took a risk on unnamed actors [like me]. But I have a name. I am Floyd Tena.”

Filmmaker May-I Guia Padilla brought together the actors and the production team of Tirik. Padilla is joined by storyteller Charlson Ong and aspiring film producer Mai Fanglayan.
