The 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival will open and close with two internationally acclaimed independent films. Both movies reflect the complexity of the Filipino experience. They also embody this year’s festival theme, “Reel Reflections.”
Festival organizers said the selected features mirror the realities, struggles, and triumphs of women and their communities.
Opening Film
The festival opens with “Enjoy Your Stay.” The movie explores a mother’s enduring love for her daughter.
Dominik Locher and Honee Alipio directed the film. Close Up Films and JBA Production co-produced it.
The story follows Luz. She is a Filipina who has spent years working as an undocumented cleaner in Switzerland. She lives in the shadows alongside her friend Aileen and other Filipina migrant workers. They constantly face the threat of discovery and deportation.
Luz’s life is shaken when her ex-husband appears on a Filipino reality TV show with their six-year-old daughter. Desperate to keep her child after years of working abroad, she promises on live television to return home for her daughter’s birthday.
Luz looks at her savings and her ballooning debts. She wonders if she can secure her daughter’s future. Racing against time, Luz is forced to find ways to earn money. This happens even if it means betraying her community and crossing her own moral boundaries.
Actress Mercedes Cabral headlines the cast. The movie also stars acclaimed Filipino actresses Anna Luna, Hasmine Killip, Irma Adlawan, Donna Cariaga, and Madeleine Nicolas.
“Enjoy Your Stay” had its world premiere in the Panorama section of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival in Germany on Feb. 14, 2026.
The opening film will screen free to the public on Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Screenings will take place at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2 at Shangri-La Plaza. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis two hours before the screening schedule.
Closing Film
“Filipiñana” serves as the festival’s closing film. The movie follows a teenage girl whose job at a country club leads to unexpected discoveries.
Jorrybell Agoto plays Isabel. Isabel is a teenage employee at an exclusive country club. She finds herself drawn to its president, Dr. Palanca, who is played by Teroy Guzman.
Isabel begins to uncover violence hidden beneath the pristine facade of the country club. She realizes that what started as an innocent infatuation is rooted in a far more sinister shared history.
Rafael Manuel directed the feature. It is a full-length expansion of his acclaimed 2020 short film of the same title.
“Filipiñana” had its world premiere in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in January.
The closing film will screen on Aug. 16 at 8:30 p.m. at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2 at Shangri-La Plaza. Tickets cost ₱350 for regular admission. Student tickets cost ₱250. Tickets will also be given on a first-come, first-served basis two hours before the screening time.
