Israel Urges Tourists to Respect Siargao Customs

The Embassy of Israel recently held an online meeting with Siargao business owners. The discussion focused on the behavior of some Israeli tourists on the island.

Ambassador Dana Kursh and Consul Moti Cohen joined the call. Over 70 stakeholders attended the event. The meeting followed the cancellation of an in-person gathering in General Luna.

The embassy stated that some Israeli visitors on the island prompted public concern. Ambassador Kursh stressed that tourists must follow local rules.

“The Embassy expects all Israeli citizens to respect local laws, regulations, and the communities they visit,” Kursh said. “We do not condone behaviour that disrespects local laws or communities.”

The Ambassador noted that most Israeli travelers wish to enjoy Philippine culture. She said they aim to support local businesses and build positive relations.

“We are here because we care about Siargao, its people, its future, and its reputation as a world-class tourism and surfing destination,” she stated. “Our intention in visiting Siargao was to listen, to learn, and to strengthen cooperation with the local government, communities, and the business sector.”

Kursh thanked local officials for their partnership. This included General Luna Mayor Johnson Y. Sajulga and Vice Mayor Dr. Romina Rusillon-Sajulga.

The Ambassador highlighted the beauty of the region. She particularly admired the surfing culture at Cloud 9.

The embassy encouraged locals to report misconduct through legal channels. They noted that Philippine authorities hold jurisdiction over all such matters.

Officials called for balanced and constructive conversations regarding the issue. They warned against using online hostility to address concerns.

“We respectfully hope discussions related to broader international issues will not overshadow the local reality of Siargao as a peaceful, welcoming, and community-driven destination,” Kursh said.

The embassy remains committed to keeping open dialogue with the Siargao community. They continue to promote mutual respect between the two nations.
