The National Commission for Culture and the Arts will lead the nationwide observance of Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino this July. The event celebrates the richness and continuing evolution of Filipino music.
Proclamation No. 933 declares the last week of July as LMP. The NCCA has scheduled several key events for this year’s festival.
Opening at the MET
The official opening program happens at the Metropolitan Theater on July 28 at 2:00 p.m. The event gathers the country’s most distinguished performers. It highlights the breadth of the Philippine musical landscape. It also honors enduring traditions and emerging voices.
Featured performers include the University of Santo Tomas Singers and the UST Symphony Orchestra. The Mandaluyong Children’s Choir and PHILBANDA will also perform. Soloists Charina Balmores, Isay Alvarez, and Reuben Laurente join the lineup. Bituin Escalante, Robert Seña, and Rachelle Gerodias complete the group.
Organizers say this collective artistry reflects the diversity and excellence of Filipino music across generations and genres.
SUDI National Awards
The NCCA will recognize exceptional music contributions through the SUDI National Music Awards. The ceremony takes place on July 28 at 8:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Theater.
The NCCA launched the SUDI Awards in 2020. The awards celebrate exemplary musical achievements across genres and production forms. These achievements have significantly shaped the Philippine music landscape. Honorees are selected annually. However, the awards ceremony is held every three years.
A total of 12 awardees from 2021 to 2024 will receive recognition. The 2021 awardees are Ben&Ben, The New Cebu Arts Foundation, Inc., and the MSU-IIT Integrated Performing Arts Guild.
The 2022 honorees include Alfonso “Coke” Bolipata, Gary Valenciano, and Maria Alexandra Chua. Regine Velasquez and SB19 also receive awards for 2022.
The 2023 awardees are Dr. Marie Jocelyn Marfil, the UST Singers, and Vincent De Jesus. The National Music Competitions for Young Artists Foundation, Inc. receives a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The ceremony will feature special performances by the awardees.
Musika Talakayan
Musika Talakayan sa LMP 2026 makes its debut this year. It introduces a two-part conference and concert series.
The event brings together musicians, scholars, artists, and cultural workers. Music enthusiasts will also engage in meaningful conversations on the country’s evolving music landscape.
The conference runs on July 30 and 31 at 9:00 a.m. at Centro de Turismo in Intramuros. It is titled “Musika at Industriya: Pamana, Kaalaman, at Malikhaing Ekonomiya.”
The discussion explores Philippine musical heritage, education, and documentation. It also examines the role of the creative economy in sustaining the local music industry.
This session aims to deepen the appreciation of music as a vital expression of cultural identity. It fosters collaboration among practitioners, educators, and researchers.
An intimate concert follows at 4:00 p.m. It is titled “Pagtatanghal: Musika at Tinig sa Mas Malapit na Espasyo.”
The concert complements the festival’s larger performances. It highlights the artistry, interpretation, and expressive depth of Filipino music.
Audiences receive a focused listening experience. The concert reinforces the festival’s commitment to celebrating musical traditions and continuing evolution.
Composition Prize Premiere
LMP concludes on August 1 at the MET Ballroom. The closing event features the Bagong Musika at Himig Natin: NCCA Composition Prize World Premiere Series.
The concert presents winning works from the NCCA Composition Prize. Categories include chamber music, handbell choir, and solo organ. Solo piano, solo rondalla, solo string, and solo wind works are also featured.
These newly commissioned works showcase the creativity of today’s Filipino composers. They contribute new repertoire to contemporary Philippine music.
