Historic Dam Becomes An Escape From the Summer Heat

An old dam continues to attract tourists sat at the foot of Sierra Madre Mountain range. The Wawa Dam cool waters gives relief from the summer heat. The cool waters collected from the Marikina River beneath the towering limestone cliff in Rodriguez, Rizal. A cool tourist and historical attraction this hot summer.

The dam was built in 1909 during the American colonial period. It’s formerly known as Montalban Dam that stands as one of the earliest engineering efforts. Later, it was decommissioned in the 1960s after the rise of Angat Dam. Since then it became a popular attraction. Then it was redefine as an eco-tourism destination.

A destination with the dramatic cliffs of Mount Pamitinan and Mount Binacayan. Where families can ride bamboo rafts across the river, children wade through moss-covered rocks, and people enjoy the steady flow of water that echoes local legends. One of these legends tells the tale of Bernardo Carpi. The story said that Carpi had parted the mountains that formed the striking gorge known as “Wawa.”

That gorge draws a steady crowd of visitors every summer. A place where eager visitors take a swim in its cool waters. Where people can retreat from Metro Manila’s heat 15 to 20 km away. An accessible natural retreat from the urban desert and city pollution.
